What is product-led growth in simple terms?

Product-led growth (PLG) is a way of growing your business where the product itself does most of the selling. Instead of long sales cycles and many meetings, users discover value by using the product directly.

In a strong PLG motion, users can sign up on their own, reach an “aha moment” quickly, and expand usage across their team without needing heavy hand-holding from sales.

How does product-led growth work?

PLG works by designing onboarding journeys, milestones, and in-product prompts that lead users to meaningful outcomes as quickly as possible.

As users complete these milestones, they qualify themselves: some accounts stay small and self-serve, while others show strong signals and become good candidates for sales expansion.

How is PLG different from sales-led growth?

In a sales-led motion, human touchpoints such as demos, discovery calls, and negotiations happen before users see much value in the product.

In PLG, users typically get value first and then talk to sales when they are ready to expand, upgrade, or roll out more broadly.
